cheerful giver ...
original by Jim Boyles

It is hard to believe that Summer is almost gone.  Now, the Fall will soon be upon us, and things in our congregations will begin to kick into gear.  It is with that in mind that these thoughts are written now.  Please take a few moments and reflect on these words:
In some ways, life hasn't changed all that much from Moses’ time. We still have questions to ask God, but its a little harder nowadays to find “a quiet place”. I get up early in the morning, usually well before dawn, and try to go for a walk or a bike ride as the sunrise creeps across the sky. Its a good time to pray, with no distractions and the quiet surrounding me. Sometimes a fog moves in; a low-flying cloud that edges soundlessly through town before it lifts. Things are different within that cloud. I can’t see more than a few feet ahead of me, so I can’t depend on my eyes to guide me. Sounds are magnified – perhaps because I’m listening so intently. Sometimes life is like that, too. We aren’t sure where we’re heading, when we’re supposed to head out, and what we’re supposed to do when we get there. We want God’s reassurance that we are, indeed, on the right path. Maybe we don’t know how to get to our destination from where we are right now; perhaps we aren’t even sure of what our goal is.  So we seek out God for answers.

  • It is the faith of the people of God that God has made us, the world, and all that is in it.  The world and our very lives are gifts from God.  This faith calls us, then, to be stewards of ourselves, of our brothers and sisters, of all that we have received, and of the world itself.
  • As we hurry through our modern, high-tech lives, we must pause to remember that all things on this earth belong to God.  We are simply the stewards of gifts God has entrusted to our care.  Let us reflect and ask ourselves if we are being good stewards of the earth and its gifts entrusted to us.
  • Our choices about money reflect our priorities.  The ways in which we allocate our resources can make a profound statement about our values.  When we acknowledge that our time and talent are given to us by God, we see that the product of our efforts also is a gift from God.  The money we earn is a blessing from God.  God intends for us to enjoy our gifts.  We are God’s children and God gives to us freely.  God has entrusted us with deciding how we use our money to fulfill God’s purpose in the world.  WE are the stewards of the money we have been given.  Stewardship is our grateful response to God’s gifts to us by returning to God a portion of all that we have been given.  The giving of our treasure – as well as our time and talent – is a symbol of our gratitude for God’s love.
Will you pray about and give some thought to how our congregations might become more faithful stewards of all that we have?  If you would like to share or discuss, or have questions about giving back to our Living God and His kingdom, don’t hesitate to ask!.  Talk to your Vestry, your Treasurer, or Stewardship Chair.  Talk with God (pray) about it.

May He continue to richly bless you in all your ways.

e-mail Contact List

For several years our churches have had an e-mail notification list to contact parishioners about events and special activities – including funerals –, passing information from the Diocese (especially good for those who do not want to give their e-mail address to the Diocese) and sharing reflections.  If you are interested in having your name added to the list, drop a note to Chuck Morello .
