Out and About: Reflections on nature and some
of the rest of us, by C. P. Stone (Wildlife sketches
by Jeff Kitterman, artist)
All the poems in this collection have outdoor
themes drawn from experiences in northern Minnesota.
The writer believes that connecting with nature is
important to everyone, in their role as responsible
citizens. Many phenomena related to nature will continue
to increase in the 21st century, including population
growth, deforestation, water, mineral and energy shortages,
extinction of native species, spread of alien species
and global climate change. (The ramifications of the
last are more serious than many believe.) Informed
decision-making by everyone about the natural world
and our effects on it, will be increasingly necessary.
Connecting with nature in meaningful ways can make
better decisions possible area by area, region
by region and worldwide. Anyone can connect with his
or her natural surroundings. This book presents some
ways of doing so, in the readable format of short
poems.
"With a scientific eye and a poet's heart,
the author shares his unique observations on the world
of nature. . . . His lyrical wisdom is sure to increase
biological awareness and awaken the slumbering poet
that resides in us all." Mary Kilgannon, freelance
writer/editor, Lakewood, Colorado
"I hope [this book] will engage appreciation
[and] promote understanding of the values of wise
use. . . . [It is] the kind of carrot that should
draw anyone into the outdoors. . . . There is a message
throughout the book of the value of taking time."
Bill Tefft, college instructor, naturalist, radio
show host, newspaper columnist, Ely, Minnesota
