It may be hard to visualize a world without
TV, computers, electronic games and other daily
components of a child's surroundings, but a simpler
time is recreated in these poems.
Childhood is an essential part of who we are
as adults. It is (or should be) a time of both structure
and freedom. New experiences are continual and sometimes
challenging, but rules can provide security through
sameness. Creativity and maturation can flow from
a good combination of both.
When I Was A Kid ... by C. P. Stone of
Ely, Minnesota is a celebration of childhood as
it was over 60 years ago. It is a collection of
short poems about a child's thoughts and feelings,
family and friends, and games and other activities
in Minnesota in the 1940s. Pencil sketches by Bemidji
artist Kathy Gustafson attractively complement the
poems.

lives “at the end of the road” near Ely,
Minnesota. He has written and edited several scientific
and semi-technical books and numerous scientific papers.
